12A-Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1

Segment- College Students (18-22)

Interview #1
My first interview was with an 18 year old girl on my floor in the dorm. She doesn't have a meal plan and I know she has been struggling with cooking on her own for the first time, so I thought she would appreciate this product. When I talked to her about it, her favorite part about the product was the thought of using the dorm stove less. She said she would definitely purchase it because the majority of the meals she makes are easy and quick food items that can be cooked and heated easily with this product. She liked that she could make food quick and on the go because, as a premed major, she was "always in Marston."

Interview #2
This time I interviewed a busy senior. He explained to me that he loved the on the go concept because he was busy with numerous organizations and classes that he had no time to cook. He was always running around campus from early morning to like 9 at night and had a lot of stress with thinking about graduation. He explained that due to all of that, his eating habits weren't good and he ate at really weird time throughout the day with no constant meal times. He told me that he though this product would be very beneficial for him to not only save money and time, but to resort back to his healthy eating.

Interview #3
A sophomore I met on the bus was checking her bank account while I was sitting next to her and was complaining to a friend that she spends way to much money on food. I sparked up a conversation, asking her if a product like mine would be helpful in saving money. She loved how much money it would save her. She could cook her meals on the go instantly instead of spending money on fast food that she was trying to avoid. She also brought up that Starbucks was her biggest expense downfall, especially since they are located so conveniently on campus. She explained to me that she had a coffee pot in her apartment, which would save her so much money, but she always had early classes and had no time to make the coffee. I added that my product could heat coffee while she was running to class and that the coffee could even help her stay awake during her 8:30am lecture. She told me  before she got off at her stop that she would definitely purchase the product.

Summary
I learned so much from these three interviews. All three of them gave me different reasons why this product would be beneficial for college students, whether that be saving time, money, and even for health related reasons. This allowed me to understand that there is vast opportunity and need awareness for a product, even when talking to just one age segment.

  1. Hi Sara;
    From your interviews, your business idea seems to solve the need for many people. I identified my need with the necessity of your interview #3. Spending money at fast food and expensive coffee chains (a.k.a. Starbucks) is something which I have been trying to avoid since I started college. I think your product would be a perfect solution to this problem. For the future, keep on developing your product’s concept. Go Gators!

  2. Good job on the buyer behavior Sara. When I keep imagining your product I keep thinking about the type of battery and battery life. The homeless people are a unique market because they don’t have the ability to plug things in, but a lot of your market seems to be people who want convenience and have access to electricity. In that case it would be easy to have a lithium rechargeable battery in the unit like we use in cell phones. With that type of technology, the unit would last for many years.

  3. I appreciate how you have developed your idea thus far. It is novel and versatile, yet simple. I would probably buy three or four to be honest to take on camping trips and to keep as a back up for hurricane situations. There are definitely ways you could get this to sell on an international market for natural disaster preparation, and recreational use for camping and hiking. Great Job!

  4. Hey Sara,

    On your third interview the woman said that she could use it to cook her food on the go. Will this product actually be able to get that hot? I feel that it would probably be very heavy if you tried to include a battery big enough to power a burner that could actually cook food instead of just heating it up. Maybe you could could include an option to plug it into the wall to power the burner.
